D Brutal 9 on Saturday 16th September 2017
“D Brutal” is the name given to the Ultimate Challenge Hike in testing one’s fitness to climb the highest mountains. Despite the difficulty, participants of all ages are enthusiastic in putting their fitness to the extreme test. The event organised by Island Hikers and Fitness Walkers is now in its 8th year. It is a fun expedition to test one determination in conquering the hills and should not be considered a race. Over the years, the popularity of the D Brutal increased to over 150 participants.
The course estimated to take between five to eight hours to complete depending on one’s capability and fitness. The distance is 12km long divided into four legs each with a different challenge.
The starting location is at Hobal Trace in the Maracas St. Joseph Valley. The first part of the journey is to ascend the twin peaks of Mt.El Tucuche (3072 feet or 936 meters). Visible on the first peak of Tucuche Summit is a panoramic view of Las Cuevas Beach and from the second peak an aerial view of Maracas Bay. Giant bromeliads, which grow abundantly at the top, collect water at its stem and hidden among its leaves is the indigenous golden tree frog. The trek continues down Tucuche Mountain with a steep descend to Maracas Bay. At this point, hikers have the option to quit or continue with a gruesome climb over the testing Lloango Mountain to return at Hobal Trace in Maracas St Joseph.
At the finish, participants rewarded with a commemorative medal, T-shirt, food and refreshments. To register for D Brutal 8th, please contact Mario: 749-2956, Jamal 761-1889, Marcia 490-2421 or visit the website www.islandhikers.com
