Paragrant or Mal-D’esto-Mac Bay on Sunday 12th August 2017
On the eastern side of Paramin, overlooking the Moka Golf Course, there is a small agricultural settlement known as Paragrant or Mal Des Tomac. Access to the place is from the Fond Pois Doux Road located two miles from the Pillars on the Maracas North Coast Road. The name Fond Pond Doux is a Patois word that refers to “a place with a sweet background” and the coastal sceneries along the ridge are magnificent. This road is also a bypass, which leads to the top of Paramin in an area called Barre La Vie or Crows Nest.
There is something magical about Paragrant, the way everything seems to be in harmony. The fascinating landscapes and peacefulness along with the refreshing mountain breeze synchronize into a delightful ambiance. The Maraval Region was the first to be developed by the French Overseers and most places today still carry French names. On the southeastern side, visible are La Silla or Saddle Road, the Moka Estate, the Champ Elysees Estate also called Fields of Happiness or Country Club and the Paradise Estate or Queens Park Savannah. On the northern side panoramic views of Saut D’eau Island, La Vache Bay, and to the west the chive plantations of Paramin and Cameron. In recent years, there been much development and there is now concrete roads, increase housing and electricity.
A secluded beach located at the bottom of the hill is Mal-D’esto-Mac Bay, which translates to “Bad Stomach. The name refers to the steep ascent to the top, or it could also refer to the rough conditions of the coast. However, during the months of July and August, the sea along this coastline is at it calmness and most inviting.
The expedition down to the bay will take an hour and starts on a concrete road that diverges from the main path into the forest. Still noticeable and a reminder of its rich heritage are the dilapidated cacao trees. It is always a pleasure to stop and pay a visit to Dougla who welcomes visitors with some seasonal fruit.
Mal-D’esto-mac Bay approximately half a mile long with silky smooth sand. On the western end, there is a small stream with a refreshing freshwater pool. The ascent to the top will take 1½ hours along a steep semi-concrete road. It is a test of one’s fitness, but the beautiful atmosphere makes it enjoyable. The serenity of the valley along with the evergreen views of Timberline, Cyril Bay, Lovers Bay and Negmawah turns this challenging walk into a pleasurable accomplishment.
