Rio Seco Waterfall

Destination:

Rio Seco is Spanish for Dry-River yet ironically the Rio Seco Waterfall has one of the largest and deepest pools for swimming. At the base there is a huge plunge pool and the bands of rock that encircle the falls create a relaxing sensation for nature lovers to sit and enjoy this picturesque landscape.Located in the evergreen valley of Salybia ,the falls is one of the most attractive spots for an out-door recreation and comprise part of the Matura National Park an Environmentally Sensitive Area declared by the E.M.A in 2004.The Forestry Division and Ministry of Tourism recognising it's potential has fixed the muddy road and erected signs so visitors can easily access the area.

Exploring further upstream for about thirty minutes there are some interesting features to be discovered.Located at the mouth on one of it's tributaries are the Rio Seco Sulphur Springs where yellow sulphur deposits can be seen oozing from the rocks. It seems unimaginable how this continuous supply of water should be called a dry river but in it's upper course the river submerges under the rocks and it's path becomes water less. It's channel flows into the larger Salybia River to exit at Saline Bay and adventuring downstream there are refreshing pools and gorges .

.The (1.2km) trek to Rio Seco will take thirty-five minutes and the highest elevation is 168 metres. The pathway which is shaded by the canopy of the mora rain-forest runs adjacent to the river.Along the way the trail crosses two gentle streams and the echoing call of the boisterous bell-bird can be heard prominently throughout the forest.
