Scheduled Date: Saturday 11th March, 2017
Habio Falls located deep inside the Rincon Valley is one of Trinidad’s most impressive waterfalls. What makes Habio so picturesque is the high cascade that descends approximately 61 metres along the rocks. It is the third highest waterfall, and the two other with higher altitudes are Maracas and Rincon Falls. The falls accessible from two directions, the first is from the north Rincon Village in Las Cuevas while the second is from Acono Village in Maracas, Saint Joseph. At the base of Habio, there is a shallow pool, but it is most attractive during the rainy season when the water level is at the heaviest. It is a sprinkling type falls with many overflows, and there is the option to escalate the rocks for a soothing refresher.
The expedition to Habio starts on the Caurita Ridge at the top of Bancal Road. The route is an hour walk along the El Tucuche Bench Road to the landmark known as the Rest House. At this point, several trails lead to various destinations however the route to Habio is northwest. The trail leads north for 100 metres and then swings left into the valley. Along the way, there are several small streams and seen in the forest are surviving cacao trees. The vegetation is Lower Montane Forest, and prominent flowers are the Mountain Rose (Brownea Coccinea), Indian Ginger Head (costus scaber) Black Stick (pachystachys coccinea) and Ink Plant (phytolacca americana)
