“D Brutal” is the name given to the ultimate challenge hike and despite the difficulty old, young and experienced hikers are enthusiastic in putting their fitness to the extreme test. The trek organised by Island Hikers and Fitness Walkers is a fun event and should not be considered a race. Over the years, the popularity has increased, and it is now in its seventh year.
The course climbing the mountains will take and estimated eight hours to complete and consist of four legs each one offering a different challenge. The starting location is at Hobal Trace in the Maracas St. Joseph Valley. The first part of the journey is to ascend the twin peaks of Mt.El Tucuche (3072 feet or 936 meters). Visible on the summit of El Tucuche’s Peak#1 magnificent sceneries of Las Cuevas and from peak#2 one can see an aerial view of Maracas Bay. Growing abundantly between the peaks are giant bromeliads and hidden in its leaves the indigenous golden tree frog. The trek continues with a steep descend to Maracas Bay and finishes with a gruesome climb over the testing Lloango Mountain.
At the finish, participants rewarded with a commemorative medal, T-shirt, food and refreshments. To register for D Brutal 7th, please contact Mario at 749-2956 or islandhikers.com.
