Blue Basin Waterfall 2017

Scheduled Date: Tuesday 3rd January, 2017

The Island Hikers Family will like to wish everyone a Happy New Year 2017. We are thankful for your continual support and feel honored to have friends who bring cheerfulness and togetherness on the trails. Our mission is to show you the hidden beauty and the fascinating natural resources of T&T in a safe and friendly environment. We wish everyone health, happiness and success in all your endeavors.

The 1st hike for the year is an easy walk to Blue Basin Waterfall. The river source originates from a remote area in Paramin known as Meyah. Its course meanders through the dense forest of the Cameron Valley and flows over a steep escarpment to a series of cascades. The Blue Basin River has always been significant to Diego Martin. In 1797, it provided water to the nineteen sugar mills and nine rum distillers in the Valley. The Water Wheel used to crush the cane got its water supply from the river. At that time, the population of Diego Martin was 141 whites, 289 free coloured and 734 slaves. In 1897, there was a depression in the Sugar Industry, and many of the estates collapsed. At River Estate the Colonial Government purchased the land to drill wells for the purpose of supplying water to Port-of-Spain and environments. Soon after, the Cadbury Brothers leased the land to do research in Cocoa Production.

The trek to Blue Basin Waterfall is a short walk along the Blue Basin Road. Note that security provided for vehicles. Further upstream situated at the top of Blue Basin Falls there are a series of pools to discover called by villagers as White Hole, Coffin Hole, and Tsou Falls.
