Habio Falls on Sat 16th January 2016
A hidden gem located deep in the Rincon Valley is Habio Waterfall. It is approximately 61 metres high and is Trinidad’s third tallest waterfall. Its water source comes from the Northern Foothills of the Mt El Tucuche Watershed. Habio is a shower type falls with numerous cascades sprinkling down the rocks. During the rainy season when its water supply increases, the fall displays its true magnificence. At the base, there is a shallow plunge pool, and there is the option to escalate the rocks for a refreshing shower.
There are two routes to access the falls both located in opposite directions. The first is from the south, at Acono Village in Maracas St Joseph and the course is up the mountains to the El Tucuche Bench Road in a landmark known as the Rest House. The journey continues downward to the falls.
The other location is from Rincon Village in Las Cuevas, which is the chosen route for the exploration. The uphill walk through the forest will take approximately 2 ½ hours. The trail ascends gradually and along the way it passes a small waterfall known as Black Pool. The vegetation is Lower Montane Forest, and noticeable flowers in the forest are the Mountain Rose (Brownea Coccinea) Copper Leaf (Chrysothemis pulchella), ink plant and wild coffee. Throughout the route dilapidated cacao trees struggle to survive and remind us of our past. The path continues further up the mountain where it reaches a river. A ten-minute walk along the riverbed leads to Habio Falls positioned in a secret location. On the return, there is the option to divert from the main path to discover Rincon Falls the country’s second tallest.
