On Saturday 26th May2012 Island Hikers and Fitness Walkers will host their annual Hike-a-thon beginning 6.30am at the sleepy village of Matelot and finishing at the Spring Bridge in Blanchisseuse.This annual event attracts a combination of various hike enthusiast from nature lovers,adventurers and athletes and allows one the opportunity to see the remote north coast beaches of Cachipa, Madamas, Grand and Petit Tacarib, Murphy Bay and Paria which are only accessable by hiking .Except for the nesting of the leather back turtles these beaches are mostly uninhabited and there natural beauty remains preserved .Along the way there is the option to take a brief stop at Madamas and Paria Bay and enjoy a refreshing cool-off at the rivers’ mouth.

The trek is divided into three groups of fast ,medium and slow pace walkers and will take the average fit person between 6-10 hours to complete the 19.7 miles coastal journey. Each participant upon completion will receive a commemorative t/shirt, a medal, along with a host of goodies and refreshments.Last year Don Mendez completed the Hike-a-thon in a record breaking time of 3 hours and 44 minutes and he is looking forward to improving his timing .

The hike is rated 8 meaning very difficult and is not recommended for first time or inexperienced hikers who maybe unfamiliar with walking long distances and the exposure to heat exhaustion. Pre-registration is required to participate in the Hike-a-thon and transportation to Matelot and the return from Blanchisseuse will be provided. A St.Johns Ambulance team will be on standby to assist hikers at the finish line.For more details contact Mario 749-2956 or islandhikers.com

Assembly: 2.00am Eric Williams Medical Complex, Mt Hope.
Departure to Matelot : 2.45 am sharp

Start of hike : 6.30am

Leg 1 : Matelot to Madamas Bay 3 hours

Leg 2 : Madamas Bay to Paria Bay 3 hours

Leg :3 Paria to Blanchisseuse 2 hours

Rating: 8 very difficult ( 6-8 hours )
Note :not recommended for first time or in experience hikers.

Cost 220.00 include meals ,refreshments, transportation to Matelot and return from Blanchisseuse,medal and t/shirt of participation.

On Saturday the 26th May the spirit of hiking comes alive when over 150 hikers walk the 19.7 miles North Coast from Matelot to Blanchisseuse . This event organised by Island Hikers Club is called the Hike-a-thon and is considered to be “:The Greatest Hiking Event for 2011”.It attracts a variety of hike enthusiast from athletes to nature lovers all with a keen willingness of enjoying the ambiance of the uninhabited North Coast .The hike starts at 6.00am from the sleepy village of Matelot and it will take various participants between 4 to10 hours to complete the distance .Last year Don Mendez finished at 3hours and 44minutes followed by Curtis Forde in 4 hours and 18 minutes .The coarse consist of 3 parts and listed below are average hiking times.

Leg 1 :Matelot to Madamas Bay ( 3 hours)
Leg 2 : Madamas to Paria (3 hours)
Leg 3 : Paria to Blanchissdeuse (2 hours)

At Paria and Madamas Bay hikers can stop and have a dip at the river’s mouth.Upon completion each participant will be given a medal and a tshirt .The fastest male and female will be given a trophy along with the oldest and youngest hiker.Although beautiful the hike is considered to be challenging and you should be accustom to trail walking.and in good physical health.To see video of last year hike-a-thon 2011 go to http://youtu.be/QNNiOdBuirg.
