Scheduled Date: Monday 2nd May, 2016
The annual coastal walk from Matelot to Blanchisseuse (19.7 miles) known, as the Hikeathon is the most prestigious hiking event. To be held on the 14th May 2016, the event attracts over 200 hundred enthusiastic hikers, and some treat it as a race while others enjoy the remote ambiance of the North Coast Seascape. Walking the North Coast takes an estimated 5-10 hours to complete, and the event attracts participants from as young as eight years to as old as seventy years. The hikeathon provides one the opportunity to discover some secret natural treasures of Trinidad. However, like all long distance events, some preparation required to accomplish.
The question is how can one determine if they are fit enough to attempt the Hikeathon? Firstly good judgment needed in knowing one’s overall health and fitness. We all have to learn to creep before one can attempt a challenge. Training requires one to walk or run at least 3-4 times a week with a steep hill included. One should be accustom to hiking long trails for over 2 hours. Training in the gym is good, but the experience of trekking uneven terrain in the burning sun is essential. A simple fitness test is to walk Hololo Mountain and then walk around the Savannah. Note: The more body weight one has to carry the harder the journey and the slower one’s pace. Excess weight causes quick tiredness and also puts pressure on the knees and the heart.
The one-way expedition from Acono Maracas St Joseph to Morne La Croix is a simple training hike for the upcoming Hikeathon. The trek starts on top the Caurita Ridge at the junction of Bancal Road and El Tucuche Road. After 20 minutes on the Tucuche Road, the trail comes to an intersection where the right track descends to Caura on the Tombasson Road. It takes an hour to get to Caura since the route may be bushy and long pants preferred. In the Caura Valley, there are two major tributaries, one on the northeastern side and the other on the northwestern side. The route to Morne La Croix is north- east upstream alongside the river. The trail crosses the river at least eight times in shallow areas below the ankle. A short diversion along the river leads to the Caura Falls. The path continues with a short ascend through the Caura Valley to the Morne La Croix Valley. The estimated hiking time is five hours of undulating terrain to reach Morne La Croix Village known as “Mountain of The Cross”.
