North Oropuche River upper

Scheduled Date: Tuesday 5th August, 2014

Upper North Oropuche River…Sun14th June’15

The North Oropuche River situated on the eastern end of Valencia is one of the most spectacular water courses in the Northern Range. It sources originate from the limestone region of Aripo, and as it cascades down the mountains, it submerges to resurface at the oilbird cave in Cumaca. It flows south-easterly along the remote regions of the Cumaca Valley supplying water to WASA North Oropuche Treatment Plant for the people of Sangre Grande, Arima and surrounding districts.

A distinct feature is the rocks along its bed contain deposits of limestone or calcium carbonate (CACO3). This action makes them less slippery to walk on and filters the water to create crystal clear pools. The view of the course restricted by interlocking spurs with jut out on each side of the bend. The popular spot for a river lime is at the Valencia Bridge but the hidden beauty of the river with its fascinating pools and gorges located upstream.

The route to access the upper regions of the North Oroupuche River begins 2 kilometres east from the Bridge on the Valencia Road. The walk is approximately 5km long and will take 1 -1/2 hours to reach the river. The terrain mostly flat with mild inclines leads through the forest and then descends to the river.  The peaceful landscape beautified by the towering Mora Woodland remains uninhabited. On the bank of the river, there is a limestone plateau with a lovely pool below that provides safe conditions for bathing.

On Sunday 14th June’15, Island Hikers explore the North Oropuche River.
