The Challenge

A rigorous mountain endurance hike, established 2008.

The Brutal is designed for seasoned hikers and those in excellent physical condition who are accustomed to navigating mountainous terrain. The route leads hikers up El Tucuche, descends to Maracas Bay, and continues over Lloango Mountain, finishing back at Maracas, St. Joseph.

Despite its difficulty, the sense of accomplishment and exhilaration from conquering obstacles and reaching the mountain's summit is unparalleled.

1. Risk Acknowledgement

The Brutal is an advanced mountain endurance hike involving steep ascents, technical descents, river terrain, and remote coastal trail sections. Participants acknowledge these inherent risks before registering.

2. Assumption of Risk

By registering, participants voluntarily assume all risks of injury, illness, or death associated with participation in a strenuous, remote mountain hiking event.

3. Release of Liability

Participants release Island Hikers, its organizers, marshals, and affiliates from any liability for injury, loss, or damage arising from participation in The Brutal 2026.

4. Medical Fitness

Participants confirm they are in excellent physical condition and accustomed to navigating mountainous terrain, as required for this event.

5. Photography Consent

Participants consent to being photographed or filmed during the event, and grant Island Hikers the right to use this media for promotional purposes.

6. Emergency Medical

In the event of injury or medical emergency, participants authorize Island Hikers organizers to seek emergency medical treatment on their behalf.

7. Code of Conduct

Participants agree to follow all safety instructions from hike organizers and marshals throughout the event.

Is The Brutal suitable for beginners?+
No. The Brutal is designed for seasoned hikers and those in excellent physical condition who are accustomed to navigating mountainous terrain — not a beginner event.
What's included in my registration?+
Your registration fee includes an official T-shirt, finisher medal, lunch, and refreshments.
How do I pay?+
During Early Bird, by bank deposit only — Republic Bank, Island Hikers, Account 180 483 119 801. Once Regular pricing begins (after Aug 22, 2026), you can also pay in person the morning of the event at the Hobal Trace assembly point.
What should I bring?+
Hydration drinks and muscle rub. Also bring your usual trail essentials — sturdy footwear, a hat, and sun protection.
What time do I need to be there?+
Assembly is 6:00 AM at Hobal Trace, Maracas, St. Joseph. The hike starts 7:00 AM sharp.
